DOT Special – Calorimetric Chambers

Custom Calorimetric Systems for Thermal and Energy Testing

‎ ‎

The DOT Calorimetric Chambers by Il Disgelo are advanced climatic systems designed to perform thermal and energy characterization tests on components, materials, HVAC systems, heat pumps, building-envelope elements and complex equipment, reproducing controlled environmental conditions while continuously measuring the energy exchanges generated during the test.

Each chamber is custom-engineered according to the test methodology, DUT characteristics, required climatic conditions, thermal power to be generated or dissipated, hydronic circuits, measurement instrumentation and applicable standards.

The DOT calorimetric platform can integrate within a single test system independent climatic environments, temperature and humidity control, thermoregulated hydronic circuits, thermal power measurement, data acquisition, solar simulation and radiant systems, creating fully customized testing laboratories.

Configuration for Calorimetric Testing

DOT calorimetric chambers can be developed with one or more independent climatic environments, including Indoor / Outdoor configurations, allowing different environmental conditions to be reproduced simultaneously on opposite sides of the DUT.

The system configuration is defined considering:

  • number and dimensions of the climatic environments;
  • required temperature and humidity ranges;
  • DUT characteristics and dimensions;
  • thermal power generated or absorbed during the test;
  • calorimetric test methodology;
  • hydronic circuits and process fluids;
  • fluid flow rates and temperatures;
  • measurement instrumentation accuracy;
  • ventilation conditions and air velocity;
  • environmental simulation systems;
  • data acquisition, processing and recording;
  • applicable standards and test procedures.

Dual-zone configurations can include an insulated partition wall and dedicated structures for specimen installation, allowing the two surfaces of the DUT to be exposed simultaneously to different climatic conditions.

Custom-Engineered Calorimetric Solutions

DOT calorimetric chambers enable the development of highly customized test systems for the characterization of the thermal and energy performance of complex products and systems.

Each solution is configured considering:

  • number of required climatic zones;
  • test chamber dimensions;
  • Indoor and Outdoor temperature and humidity conditions;
  • DUT thermal characteristics;
  • required heat dissipation capacity;
  • water, water-glycol or other process-fluid circuits;
  • flow rates, pressures and temperatures to be monitored;
  • type and accuracy of the instrumentation;
  • partition walls and support structures;
  • radiant surface conditions;
  • optional solar simulation;
  • acquisition and calculation systems;
  • interfaces with external equipment;
  • available installation space and site constraints.

The design is developed starting from the test methodology, allowing environmental condition generation, physical quantity measurement and energy performance calculation to be integrated within the same platform.

Complex Calorimetric Testing

Energy characterization of a product often requires the simultaneous control of several parameters and precise measurement of the thermal exchanges generated during operation.

DOT calorimetric chambers make it possible to:

  • create independent Indoor and Outdoor climatic conditions;
  • control temperature and humidity during programmed cycles;
  • manage DUTs with active heat dissipation;
  • thermoregulate hydronic circuits connected to the product;
  • measure fluid flow rates, temperatures and pressures;
  • determine thermal power supplied or absorbed;
  • acquire electrical and energy parameters;
  • simulate different operating and environmental conditions;
  • reproduce climatic profiles varying over time;
  • perform sinusoidal temperature and humidity cycles;
  • monitor DUT behavior throughout all test phases;
  • integrate customer-specific test procedures.

In the most advanced calorimetric systems, flow-rate measurements together with inlet and outlet fluid temperatures allow the exchanged thermal power to be calculated continuously, with the calculations integrated directly into the control and acquisition system.

Solar Simulation and Environmental Comfort

DOT calorimetric chambers can be integrated with dedicated systems for reproducing complex environmental conditions.

For applications requiring natural solar irradiation simulation, dimmable Solar Test systems can be integrated and engineered to provide controlled and uniform irradiation over the DUT.

Configurations can also include thermoregulated radiant panels, divided into independent zones, to control wall surface temperatures and evaluate system behavior under different radiant conditions.

These technologies extend calorimetric testing to the characterization of building envelopes, solar and photovoltaic panels, transparent elements and environmental comfort studies.

DOT Control Technology

All DOT calorimetric chambers can be equipped with:

  • DOT Touch Panel;
  • proprietary CliMaLogic® software;
  • industrial PLC;
  • acquisition of temperature, humidity, flow rate, pressure and energy parameters;
  • independent management of Indoor and Outdoor environments;
  • programming of climatic cycles and sinusoidal profiles;
  • data logging and export;
  • Ethernet communication and industrial protocols;
  • remote supervision and control;
