Custom Calorimetric Climatic Chamber for Politecnico di Torino

6 November 2024

Two independent climatic environments for heat transfer and energy performance analysis

Il Disgelo designed and manufactured a custom calorimetric climatic chamber consisting of two independent environments for the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Torino, developed for energy research and performance characterization activities.

The system simultaneously reproduces different climatic conditions within the two Indoor and Outdoor environments, enabling the analysis of heat transfer and the performance of materials, building components, energy systems, solar panels and photovoltaic modules.

Solution developed

The configuration integrates two separate climatic chambers, positioned on opposite sides of the test specimen and controlled independently.

The system was designed to provide:

  • independent control of Indoor and Outdoor conditions;
  • precise temperature and relative humidity control;
  • measurement of heat transfer between the two environments;
  • high stability and uniformity of climatic conditions;
  • programmable temperature and humidity profiles;
  • integrated dimmable artificial solar simulation system;
  • test data acquisition and management;
  • repeatable calorimetric and energy performance testing.

‎‎ ‎ ‎

Main technical data

  • number of environments: 2 independent environments, Indoor and Outdoor;
  • overall internal usable dimensions: 2420 × 5830 × 4030 mm;
  • internal usable dimensions of each environment: 2420 × 2915 × 4030 mm;
  • Indoor temperature range: +5 °C to +50 °C;
  • Outdoor temperature range: −15 °C to +50 °C;
  • adjustable relative humidity: 20% to 95%;
  • temperature reading accuracy: ±0.5 °C;
  • temperature uniformity: ≤2 °C;
  • temperature change rate: ≥0.5 °C/min;
  • solar simulation: integrated dimmable artificial solar system;
  • installed power: 59 kW;
  • power supply: 400 V ±10%, three-phase with neutral and protective earth;
  • approximate total weight: 3700 kg.

Performance values measured with an empty chamber and no internal load, according to IEC EN 60068-3-5.

Result

The solution enables Politecnico di Torino to perform climatic and calorimetric tests under controlled and repeatable conditions, analysing the thermal and energy performance of test specimens exposed to different Indoor and Outdoor conditions.

The project combines independent climatic control, measurement accuracy and solar simulation in a single custom system, providing an advanced research tool for energy efficiency, building envelopes and sustainable technologies.

The contract was awarded to Il Disgelo through an open European tender procedure.
