Two 1 m³ systems and one 2.7 m³ chamber for thermal-climatic testing of motors and powertrain systems

Il Disgelo developed for Maserati a platform consisting of three DOT TCEM climatic chambers dedicated to testing motors and powertrain systems: two 1 m³ chambers and one 2.7 m³ chamber.

The three systems were designed to allow the DUT to operate inside controlled climatic environments while maintaining integration with dynamometers, motor shafts, electrical connections and external fluid circuits.

The systems also integrate a dedicated nitrogen inerting and oxygen monitoring system, developed to increase safety during specific test configurations.

Developed Solution

The project includes two 1 m³ DOT TCEM chambers and one 2.7 m³ DOT TCEM chamber, allowing DUTs and test configurations with different dimensional requirements to be managed.

The chambers use a modular structure composed of two joinable half-shells, with multilayer insulation and an AISI 304 stainless-steel interior. This architecture facilitates DUT installation and integration with the dynamometer shafts.

The systems were designed to provide:

  • three dedicated climatic test stations;
  • two 1 m³ chambers and one 2.7 m³ chamber;
  • thermal and climatic testing on motors and powertrain systems;
  • temperature range from −40 °C to +120 °C;
  • relative humidity control;
  • temperature change rates up to 4 °C/min;
  • management of thermal loads generated by the DUT;
  • integration with dynamometers and test benches;
  • special feedthroughs for motor shafts;
  • dedicated feedthroughs for wiring and fluid circuits;
  • continuous nitrogen inerting;
  • oxygen monitoring inside and outside the chamber;
  • compressed-air purging of the chamber at the end of the test;
  • dedicated overpressure protection system;
  • safety interlocks;
  • test-cycle management through CliMaLogic®;
  • data logging and connection to external systems via Ethernet, VNC Viewer and Modbus TCP/IP.

Result

The project enabled Maserati to implement a platform consisting of three DOT TCEM climatic chambers in two different volumes, providing greater flexibility for testing motors and powertrain systems with different sizes and test requirements.

The combination of two 1 m³ chambers and one 2.7 m³ chamber, together with thermal-climatic control, inerting, oxygen monitoring and test-bench integration, enables modular and repeatable validation activities.
